Curved timber frames add a new dimension to individual windows, doors or column arrangements with their fluid looks and outward transparency.
There are five ways to create curved timbers:
- To cut an arch from a large single piece of wood.
- To join several pieces of wood at angles so that an arch can be cut from the assembly.
Harvest a curved tree. - To cut an arch from a large single piece of wood. This works well when you are interested in a more organic form and only need a single arch, as it is not often that you find many trees curved the same way.
- To steam a piece of timber to make the fibers more flexible so that the timber can then be bent. The above methods of creating curved timber has good and bad points. The final decision as to which method to choose must be weighed against the desired end result.
- To cut thin pieces of wood and glue them to each other on a form, which holds them until the glue sets. Once the glue is dry a curved timber is lifted off the mold.
